Gaijin! Gaijin! by Kenneth Fenter

“…Although I have been in contact with Japanese since 1956, visiting Japan nine times and teaching American Culture and ESL to Japanese College students newly arrived in America, I nevertheless learned a lot about Things Japanese’ from GAIJIN! GAIJIN! It is indeed a very special book just as the four Fenters are very special people to have gone to Japan and lived the lives they led.” Dr. David L. Hess, Dept. of History, Frostburg State College, Frostburg, MD

“....Fuenta san... I burst into tears of joy as I read the end of Gaijin! Gaijin! and found that you and your family did indeed return to Isahaya. Your account of your first year there really touched me. What unforgettable experiences all of you had and all because you had the courage to allow it to happen....Your book is so well written and made me feel as though I were kneeling there on a tatami mat with you hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting, and enjoying everything with you and Lora. …I was in Japan long enough to know of some of the frustrations, fears, and inconveniences. I also learned how deep and meaningful is the friendship of a Nihonjin... I can hardly wait for Mo Ichido...” Mary W. Johnson, Lake Oswego, OR

“Dear Ken, I feel I can call you “Ken” since you are near and dear to my heart after reading “Gaijin!” I’m in Japan on a Mombusho post-doctoral fellowship… your story was just what I needed during my Christmas bout with homesickness! Your book helped immensely in psychologically preparing for that experience… Thanks again for the book.” Marty Turner, Osaka, Japan

“...Just finished reading your book, Gaijin! Gaijin!... I laughed, cried, and identified throughout the book. We’ll have to form an ‘alumni club,’ all of us that have come to Japan to teach... The thing that kept coming to mind as I read of your experiences was that although we will have so much to share in common, we all have very different experiences, and initial impressions...” Frank and JoElayne Johnson, American School In Japan, Tokyo
